A Little Good Fortune After Dark
Beneath a moonlit sky, a tiny bat spreads its wings among crescent moons, stars, and delicate ornamental flourishes. Handcrafted in sterling silver and crowned with a luminous white moonstone, this celestial bat necklace celebrates the mysterious beauty of the night and the unexpected charm of one of nature's most misunderstood creatures.
With its richly textured silver, antique-inspired ornamentation, and softly glowing gemstone, this distinctive pendant feels like a small treasure from another time—a talisman of good fortune for those who find wonder in the shadows.
Bring a little moonlit magic into your everyday life. Choose your preferred necklace option and make this celestial companion your own.
Handcrafted in Sterling Silver
This celestial bat pendant begins with an intricate impression from a decorative wax seal stamp, pressed into precious metal clay to capture its detailed imagery in sterling silver.
After firing, I solder on a silver bezel cup and a generously sized ring that serves as the pendant's bail. A natural white moonstone is then carefully set above the bat, nestled among crescent moons, stars, and delicate ornamental details.
Darkened recesses and polished highlights bring depth and definition to the design, emphasizing the bat's outstretched wings and the intricate celestial imagery surrounding it.
The reverse features its own richly textured floral and ornamental pattern, giving this little talisman an unexpected beauty on both sides.
Bat Symbolism: Good Fortune and the Beauty of the Night
Although bats are often associated with mystery and darkness in Western folklore, they have a very different reputation in Chinese decorative tradition, where they are celebrated as symbols of happiness, blessings, and good fortune.
In Chinese, the word for bat (fú) sounds like the word for good fortune or blessing, helping establish these remarkable creatures as auspicious symbols in art and ornament.
Bats are also extraordinary navigators, finding their way through darkness with an ability that seems almost magical. For me, they offer a lovely reminder that we can find our way even when the path ahead isn't entirely clear.
Surrounded by crescent moons and stars, this celestial bat pendant offers a gentler interpretation of a familiar Gothic creature: not an omen of fear, but a small companion for those who find beauty in the night and wonder in the misunderstood.

From the Artist's Field Notes
My fascination with bats began in an unexpected place: among the antique Chinese furniture and architectural pieces at a wonderfully eclectic gallery where I worked in the 1990s. Some of the old wooden doors were decorated with bats, and I was intrigued to learn that in Chinese tradition, these creatures were symbols of happiness and good fortune.
It changed the way I looked at them.
Over the years, I discovered more reasons to appreciate bats: their remarkable navigation abilities, their importance to healthy ecosystems, and, eventually, their unexpectedly adorable little faces. (There's a reason the internet affectionately calls them sky puppies.)
When I discovered this celestial bat wax seal stamp, with its crescent moons, stars, and intricate ornamentation, I knew I wanted to translate the design into silver. I love the idea of carrying a creature so often misunderstood as a small talisman of good fortune, wonder, and the hidden beauty of the natural world.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the moonstone a genuine gemstone?
Yes. This pendant features a natural white moonstone rather than the white labradorite commonly marketed as rainbow moonstone. Natural moonstones may display subtle variations in color and translucency, sometimes with a slightly gray cast.
Does the necklace include a chain?
This pendant may be purchased on its own or with your choice of sterling silver beaded chain. Please refer to the chain options photograph and select your preferred length and finish from the drop-down menu.
Is this necklace suitable for everyday wear?
Sterling silver is well suited to regular wear with appropriate care. Moonstone is a comparatively delicate gemstone, so I recommend removing the necklace before bathing, swimming, exercising, or engaging in activities that might expose it to impacts or chemicals.
How should I care for my necklace?
Gently clean the silver with a soft jewelry polishing cloth, taking care around the moonstone and intentionally darkened details. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged exposure to water.
Will my pendant look exactly like the photographs?
Yes! The pendant pictured is the exact piece you will receive, including its naturally unique white moonstone. If future versions are offered, each will be individually handcrafted with subtle variations in finish and gemstone character.
