Leaping Stag Pendant: Sterling Silver Talisman Necklace
Threshold talisman · Wild freedom · Nature spirit · Handcrafted heirloom
There is a moment - just before you step from the porch light into the dark of the garden, just before you say yes to the thing that frightens you most - when the whole world holds its breath. This pendant was made for that moment. It was made for you, standing at the threshold, heart hammering, alive.
Wear it as a reminder that the woods are not something to be feared, but something to be answered - and that the most sovereign version of yourself is already waiting on the other side of the tree line.

The stag has been a symbol of the untameable self for millennia - lord of the deep wood, keeper of the wild threshold. In Celtic and medieval European traditions alike, the stag appearing at the forest's edge was not an omen of danger but of invitation: cross over, and discover what you are made of. This creature leaps not away from something, but toward it - forward, airborne, antlers crowning the sky.
This pendant began as an antique button, its surface bearing the memory of an unknown craftsperson's hand. A mold was taken of the original, preserving every worn edge and shadow in the relief, and from that mold the pendant was cast in sterling silver metal clay - a process that honors the artifact's age while giving it a second life as a living talisman. The result is not a reproduction. It is a continuation.
The antiqued finish deepens the recessed details, making the stag appear to emerge from the dark of the forest itself. The raised border - echoing the rim of an old wax seal or a medieval coin - frames the scene as though it were a memory pressed into silver: permanent, portable, yours.

A note from the artist
I live in suburban Maryland, just outside Washington, DC - a place most people do not think of as wild. And yet, nearly every morning, I look out my front window and find deer in the yard. I have lived in this house for over twenty years, and I want to tell you honestly: the sight of them has never once become ordinary to me.
There is something in the way a deer simply stands - unhurried, fully present, neither frightened nor domesticated - that stops me cold every time. They are creatures of the in-between: comfortable at the edge of the lawn and the edge of the woods simultaneously. They embody the threshold I spend so much of my creative life trying to describe. When I found this button and held the stag in my palm, I knew immediately what it wanted to become. This piece is, in many ways, a love letter to the deer in my yard, and to all of us who have stood in the doorway between the known and the unknown, and chosen to leap.
About the maker
This jewelry is crafted by an Art Clay World Certified Level 1 Instructor whose love affair with jewelry design began in the early 1990s with the intricate architecture of bead weaving. What you hold represents more than thirty years of lived experience - a sustained, deepening inquiry into mythological symbolism, material alchemy, and the metallurgical mastery required to transform raw metal clay into heirloom silver.
Every piece is engineered for structural integrity as well as beauty. The connections are tested. The metal is fired to specification and finished with the patience that only a single-artist studio allows. When you invest in one of these pieces, you are acquiring something that mass production is constitutionally incapable of providing: the considered attention of a maker who has spent decades learning exactly this.
Questions & care
What does the leaping stag symbolize, and why is it considered a talisman?
Across Celtic, Norse, and medieval European traditions, the stag represents sovereignty, freedom, and the courage to cross into unknown territory. It is the guardian of the forest threshold - the liminal space between the tame and the wild, the known and the possible. Worn as a talisman, the leaping stag is an invitation to trust your own momentum and move toward rather than away from what calls you. Many wearers choose this piece during times of transition: a new career, a creative risk, a personal reckoning. It is a reminder, held close to the body, that the leap itself is the point.
How should I care for a sterling silver piece with an antiqued finish?
Sterling silver will oxidize over time - which works beautifully with one of my antique finished pieces. A soft polishing cloth used gently on the raised surfaces will restore brightness when desired. Avoid submerging in harsh chemicals, chlorinated water, or ultrasonic cleaners, as these can strip the intentional antiqued patina from the recessed areas. Store in an airtight pouch or jewelry box when not in use. The piece is designed to age gracefully, gaining character rather than deteriorating - like all things worth keeping.
